The perfect company - it's the holy grail of the investment world. The company that will make its initial investment hundreds of times over. It's what everyone shoots for. To have bought Microsoft when it first went public... It's how fortunes are made. What does make "the perfect company"?

The search for the perfect company is not the pursuit of day-traders or market insiders. They're looking for quick and dirty returns. High speed, high risk, high stress. No, the perfect company is more along the lines of what an individual investor - like you or I - would look for. I don't want to have to have my hand on my mouse until the closing bell just to make sure I don't lose my shirt. I want to buy a position in a company and know that regardless of what happens today or tomorrow, eight months from now, my portfolio will be worth more than today. I'm not talking about a laissez-faire approach to investing - far from it. What I'm talking about does take a time investment as well, in research, understanding the ins and outs of a company, but one that will be paid off in spades.

That's an approach that I've taken seriously (guess what, we're talking about money here), and that I feel makes the market less of a gamble. It's also a mantra that has gotten me yields in the double digits over the Dow to date in a markedly tough year.

So, you may be asking, "What is the perfect company? What traits should it have?"

One of the most important things - in my opinion - about investing in a company is the feeling that you're a partner.

It's essential to know the company inside and out. Be aware of all their products, as well as all of their numbers. Above all, you should be excited in the company you're investing in. If not, what's the point? Your gut is an important part of investing. If you're portfolio doesn't get you going, you might as well be gambling in Vegas. At least you'd get comped.

In the perfect company, fundamentals are, well, fundamental. It's so important to familiarize yourself with the annual and quarterly reports (the 10-K is your friend) and listen to quarterly conference calls (both can be done online, very easily. Check out the company's investor relations site to learn more). Remember, you're not banking on market psychology, you're focusing on profits. No matter what happens to a company, if they've got juicy profits, their share price WILL go up. There's no two ways about it. Make sure that the company is making money and you will be too.

Emotion has a natural part in this. If you're loving a company, it can be expected that you'll be blinded by that fact when it comes time to sell. One remedy for this is defining a reasonable sell point before you even buy. All too often people watch their positions go up past their expectations only to see them fall back down below what they bought for. Have a look at analyst estimates as well as other factors (after following the market for a little while, it becomes sort of instinctual) to try and determine a price to sell at no matter what. Just as importantly, don't forget to reevaluate frequently. Things change, you don't want to miss out on huge gains or look toward a share price the stock will never get to. News and economic factors will influence things, change you're estimates appropriately.

Just as you should reevaluate your sell point for a stock, you should often reevaluate your position in the company itself. While a company may have been exciting and ideal for you when you purchased their stock, things change. Maybe the product line you though would take off didn't. Maybe their visionary CEO retired. Maybe something just doesn't feel right. Ambivalence has no place in this game.

Don't be afraid to speak your mind on the company's business, either. You're an owner, however small, and have an obligation to protect your investment. While you might not have the same clout or voting ability as an institutional investor, or anyone who measures their equity in percentages of the company, but sometimes, making your points known makes all the difference. Lobby to those powerful holders of the company as well as other individual investors. (We'll have more on making your piece heard in an upcoming issue).

If you want to try your hand at speculative, technical trading, this isn't the method for you. If, however, you want to shoot for a combination of excitement and profit, you may want to look into this a bit. It's worked for me. If you're a seasoned investor, or a newbie willing to learn (through methods that don't require money initially) you may find this to be a particularly rewarding idea.

Have you ever worked for someone who was such a micro-manager that it drove you crazy? And have you ever worked for someone who was so hands-off that you felt like a lone warrior on the battlefield? These are examples of you working for leaders who did not adapt their style based on the employee's needs. I would venture to guess that you were not entirely motivated to put out your very best effort every time when you were feeling such frustrations.

What can you, as a manager, do to prevent the same mistake? My suggestion is to follow what good parents do.

Good parents instinctively know how they need to manage their children. But we sometimes don't make the same connection when we are at work. Let's think about the different stages of a child's development.

The Toddler At this stage, there is so much they don't know. They are just learning the basics of how to walk, and run, and talk, and play with others. The parents are generally right there at almost every moment. They are very involved in the child's development.

They set boundaries for the child: "don't' go near the stove, its hot!"
They give very directive instructions: "Put the toy truck back into the basket."
They give frequent feedback and encouragement: "That's right, this is a blue ball. Now pick out the red one. That's great!"

When you have an employee that is at the toddler stage in terms of job skills and proficiencies, you need to adopt the hands-on parenting style of leadership. First determine what they know and don't know. Set boundaries for them so they don't get into big trouble. Be very directive in what you want done, and provide them feedback and encouragement so they know whether they are progressing and satisfying your expectations or not.

The Teenager
At this stage, the child wants more independence, and prefers to figure things out for himself. But the parents know that they still need to provide supervision. And they also give the child more space to experiment and build confidence.

When your employees are at the teenager stage, they often think they know more then they actually do. Surely you were never guilty of this when you were a teenager, right? So, you still need to be around enough to keep them out of trouble. Instead of checking in with them every day, you can now check in with them every week on their progress.

Your requests can be less directive, and more objective defined ("I'd like you to clean up your room this weekend.") Instead of offering information and directions with every assignment, you can now wait for your employee to approach you with questions.

When your employees see they you have eased off your level of supervision, they know that you are feeling more comfortable with their ability to perform, and their confidence grows. But always remember to continue to give feedback and acknowledgement for their efforts.

The Young Adult
Now your employees are almost independent. Like a good parent, you have provided them all the skills and knowledge to make it on their own. At this point, you can ease off even more on giving directions and checking up on progress. Instead, you want to help them grow as contributors to your organization.

Now when you hand over an assignment, you can give the most crucial details and leave them to figure out the approach. You let them know that when they come to you with problems and questions, you would like to see their recommendations or solutions.

At this stage, your responsibility as a "parent" is quite light. But you must continue to give feedback and acknowledgement so your employees stay motivated to excel. They need to know that you have noticed their development and appreciate their efforts.

The Adult
Now you are on "easy street". Your child has moved out of the house, and is successful and productive. At this point, your role as parent is to show love and appreciation of the person they have become (thanks to your hard work), and to offer them opportunities for growth.

Your expectation of these employees is that they can pretty much operate without you. You provide them with the vision of where you are going and they immediately rally the troops and make a plan and start marching down the road.

When these employees encounter a problem, you expect them to come to you with a list of alternatives, the recommendation they want to choose, and just ask for your concurrence. They come prepared with all the critical information you need to make a sound decision. You can ask these employees to be mentors to your toddlers or teenagers and take some of the responsibilities from you. You continue to provide them feedback and acknowledgement so they know they are still on the right track.

Now take a look at your team, and make an assessment of what stage of development each of your employee is at present. Adopt the appropriate parenting/leadership style that is needed and your employee will respond. Most employees want to do a good job for you, so set your expectations clearly and watch them perform.

Throughout the past decade, workplace diversity issues have allowed organizations to adjust their policies in response to the need for workplace equality in all aspects. As a result of the dynamic political, social and economic changes, some companies have willingly become more inclusive, integrating women, people of color, gays/lesbians, and individuals with disabilities into their workforce at all levels of their organizations. However, others have failed to make this paradigm shift. The Federal government has failed to see the benefits of a diverse workforce, which is evident by the lack of diversity of the people it serves. Research by the Center for Creative Leadership (2002), show women in business have been required to adapt to a well established hierarchal system built around the strengths of its majority of male players. As women have entered the workplace, they initially try to create only a modest variant in a male dominated workplace. Gender diversity could be very beneficial to the Federal government, causing greater creativity in group decision-making and improved task performance.

Leadership is usually considered to be predominantly a male prerogative in corporate, political, military, and other sectors of our society. This might explain why, although women have gained increased access to supervisory and middle management positions, they remain underrepresented in leadership positions. Throughout history, women have been contributors to society, helped shaped America, and exercised their power and their abilities through various interests. But the recognition as leaders is still slow to come.

Women are still confronted by an invisible barrier preventing their rise into leadership ranks the "glass ceiling." However, studies indicate that women are inching through the glass ceiling that has prevented them from attaining leadership positions. When we look at the surveys and research, women seem to have progressed in the last couple of years in terms of management positions. The caveat however is, women who achieve these positions are usually placed under closer scrutiny and their evaluation is not always positive. While studies propose that women are likely to receive positive evaluations when their leadership roles are defined in feminine terms, on traditional, masculine measures of leadership, women's leadership is often perceived to be lower than their male counterparts.

Some women have developed strategies for overcoming workplace barriers to career advancement and achieved senior positions. While these barriers do not restrict the careers of all women that they impact, a significant number is evident from the poor representation of women at senior levels. The limited number of women reaching the highest positions in the government indicates that further attention to overcoming these barriers in the future is necessary.

I've had numerous conversations with web entrepreneurs about this topic and many of them agree that the revenue models for web business are often poorly thought out and depend too heavily on advertising for success. Back in the DotComBoom it was accepted that you didn't have to worry too much about your revenue model, it was all about investment capital and IPO's. Of course this eventually led to a crash and nowadays web business, like normal business, has to show sound revenue models and profit forecasts. They need a sustainable way to make money - who would have thought that!

The Internet has largely been driven by free information. Users expect services and information to be provided for free and are very reluctant to spend. Previously entrepreneurs used the logic that they could capture the market benefiting from network effects and then worry about making money either from advertising or by charging for services.

Unfortunately many web businesses quickly realised that advertising revenue sometimes wasn't enough to even cover costs let alone make a significant profit and as soon as they started charging for their services their audience quickly ran off to the nearest copy-cat free service provider out there.

So what is a web entrepreneur to do? You have a brilliant idea that will likely find an audience but how can you make money from it?

Before I go on I want to state that I do believe advertising revenue is a viable business model if you can balance your costs, establish a niche market and use innovative delivery methods. I know because I have made money from advertising myself. However it's probably not the ideal method to become really wealthy because generally the labour and resources required to feed your audience tends to grow proportionally with the amount of advertising revenue you can generate. There are exceptions to this rule of course, I just suggest you carefully monitor your real results and don't invest heavily expecting advertising revenue to make you a millionaire.

Here are a few alternative strategies you can employ to generate cash:

Sell Something

An obvious solution is to sell something. Look at your audience, or if you are at the business planning stage, your potential audience, and think about products or services they would be interested in. You might have an idea for a product or service you can produce yourself and then sell directly from your website.

EBay Wholesale Product List

Alternatively buy wholesale products from a supplier and then ship them yourself, or if you want to keep start-up costs down use a drop shipper.

Key Term: Drop Shipping. A drop shipper is a supplier or wholesaler that provides products to resellers. As a reseller you advertise the products for sale on your website, mail order catalogue, newsletter or other means. When you make a sale you don't have to ship anything, you complete the order with the drop shipper and they send the product direct to your client. This means you don't have to hold any inventory. This is a good method to start with if you are new to the industry or want to test your market's response to products without heavy investment.

Affiliate Programs

are literally thousands of affiliate programs out there that offer products or services (courses, eBooks, software, anything really) that you can resell to your audience. You earn a percentage of the fee from every sale you make. Some programs will simply pay you for sending traffic to their website.

The benefit of this method is you can search for products ideally suited to your target market that have proven value. Often affiliate programs give you direct links to professionally produced and tested sales pages, all you need to do is drive your targeted traffic to these sites.

Key Term: Affiliate Marketing is a widespread method of promoting a website, in which an affiliate is rewarded for every visitor, subscriber and/or customer provided through his/her efforts. Compensation may be made based on a certain value for each visit (Pay-per-click), registrant (Pay-per-lead), or a commission for each customer or sale (Pay-per-Sale).
Affiliate programs are extremely powerful methods to sell products or services. Many of the web's most successful entrepreneurs leverage this method to increase the exposure of their information products. When this system works it's a win-win situation, affiliates make money and the seller increases sales and exposure. As an affiliate it's not too hard to test a product or service on your market, send a few links through a newsletter, write a review piece that links to an affiliate program or just stick some links on your site and see what happens.

A word of warning though, you must have a targeted audience and it has to be of significant size (try 1000 uniques a day at least) before you should expect good results. Let's say you do some conservative math - 1% of your visitors will click through an affiliate program, and then perhaps 1% of those visitors actually make a purchase. If that calculates into some reasonable moolah based on your traffic numbers then perhaps you have a potentially reliable revenue stream. Of course you may experience conversion rates much higher than that and you should always aim to improve conversion rates through testing different methods and sales copy, but by planning conservatively you know what to expect in worst case scenarios.

Premium Content and Subscriptions

Over the years I've seen many of my favourite hobby sites I frequent go through a genesis. They start off small and provide quality content which is updated daily. Their audience expands. Costs start to get prohibitive and they need to generate more income because plain old advertising banners are not cutting it anymore. The next step? - offer a paid premium service for members only. They still provide some free content but those willing to pay have access to extra articles and other special features. This is not a bad option if you believe you can provide something of value to your members that is worth paying for above and beyond the free services. The good thing is you won't necessarily loose your existing customer base because you still offer free content and hopefully you can convert a reasonable number to paying customers. The trick is to meet needs in both areas - the free customers and those that want more and are prepared to pay for it. You can't offer too much or too little in the free area, it's a fine balance. Take a look at one of my favourite tennis sites for an example, www.TennisReporters.net, which is run by a tennis journalist. It's a good example because the division between subscription and free content is clear and the site itself is hardly professional looking. It's all about the content, that's what brings in the moolah.

A possible problem is how to implement a membership system on your website. The simplest way is to set up a password protected area on your site with the premium content. This is easy to do on most hosting accounts and if you don't know how ask your hosting provider. Once you have the password protected area you simply set up a purchase link and then send the new member the appropriate password and username. Using an autoresponder/shopping cart such as Marketer's Choice makes this process completely automated and simple enough. You could also just have a Paypal.com purchase link and then manually send out the password as each purchase is made. The only problem with this method is your members can share the login details with each other rather than each buying a subscription each. Alternatively you could investigate hiring a freelance programmer to build something custom for you or search online for a subscription management system. The InvisionBoard.com forum system has an inbuilt subscription upgrade package which controls subscriptions using member groups. The problem with this is you have to manage your content via the forum, which if your site is intended to be community driven may be a viable option.

The Secret - Multiple Streams of Revenue

I'm sure you can see where I am going here. The smart entrepreneurs don't plan to make money from just one channel of income, they employ many. You should provide advertisers with comprehensive campaign options including different banner positions and text links. Offer a newsletter and eCourse, sell your own products and services, sell other people's products and services and join affiliate programs. Mix in a subscription based service and/or premium content and you have a collection of 4-5 sources of income from your audience. You must skilfully interweave all your content with these different advertising methods to create a seamless revenue generating machine AND valuable service to your clients. You maximise the return on your audience and are not dependent on one stream of income. Best of all most of the income methods I've mentioned can be systematised which means once you have the systems in place you just sit back and feed more traffic to your site. You spend your time working on growing your audience which will runoff into revenue growth as well.

Every once in a while I come across something that bridges the gap between tangibility and intangibility in a single bound.

One of my former newsletter client companies developed software that provides stereographic (like 3-D) views of oil and gas reservoirs. Now, I've seen many of this company's developments in reservoir simulation over the past 10 years or so, but this one was special.

Why? Because to use this software, you put on 3-D glasses. Like the kind we wore in movie theaters in the 1950s, albeit much more sophisticated.

For my client, the significance of the software is its ability to run on regular desktop computers, which makes it more affordable than existing software.

For its customers, mostly engineers in oil companies, the view is the thing: it can make or save them millions of dollars.

But for me, with my limited knowledge of software and reservoir simulation, the glasses were the thing. They transformed an idea into reality; well, virtual reality at least.

If they choose to do so, they can use the glasses to bridge the divide between tangibility and intangibility. Obviously, they can't print or display the views, as they do with other visualization software, but they can show the glasses.

For those of us old enough to remember the 3-D movies of the 1950s, the connection jumps out at us (literally and figuratively). Or, you may recall the video game goggles that appeared at various times in the past decade. Whatever our experience, the glasses should trigger curiosity about the altered reality we find by wearing them.

In this case, the glasses become a proxy for the software program. The glasses aren't the program, but they convey its essence quickly and effectively. It allows prospective customers or clients to grasp the significance of an intangible product.

So, real products can help us effectively communicate the essence of an intangible experience. Next time you're browsing through a department store or mall, look at the products on display through new eyes. Look at them as prospective tools for demonstrating the essence of your intangible product or service.

In summary, one thing can be a proxy for another thing, allowing us to convey the essence of an intangible through something others can touch or see.

Ways to Tread Lightly with an ATV

With the number of all-terrain vehicle riders climbing past 16 million, the ATV sport is grabbing attention as land managers try to balance its popularity with the nation's natural resources.

"ATV riding can be a blast," said Patti Klein, National Stewardship Coordinator for the Bureau of Land Management. "But it can also be damaging to public lands if not done responsibly. As land managers, we encourage people to help protect the great outdoors by riding responsibly and practicing outdoor ethics, like those created by Tread Lightly!."

Tread Lightly!, a nonprofit organization that educates people to recreate responsibly, has issued some practical tips on minimizing impacts from ATVs outdoors.

-Stay only on roads, trails or other areas designated for ATV use.

-Try to stay in the middle of the trail to avoid widening it.

-Cross streams only at designated fording points, where the trail crosses the stream. Approach the stream slowly, crossing at a 90-degree angle.

-On switchbacks, avoid roosting around the apex of the turn when climbing or brake-sliding during descent, both of which gouge the trail.

-On slick trails, moderate the throttle and use the clutch to gain maximum traction with minimum tailspin.

-Try to avoid muddy trails, save them for future trips when they are dry.

-Pack out what you pack in. Carry a trash bag on your vehicle and pick up litter left by others.

-Following a ride, wash your ATV and support vehicle to avoid spreading noxious weeds the next time you ride.

-Remember, motorized vehicles are not allowed in areas designated "wilderness."

-Observe proper human waste disposal. Bury your waste at least six inches deep and camouflage the hole or pack out your waste.

-Take an ATV training course to maximize safety. Always wear a helmet, eye protection and other safety gear.

20 WAYS TO LOSE WEIGHT

1. Take it one step at a time

Start by paying attention to what you eat. Cut back on fat and sweets and add more fruit and vegetables. After you have that under control, add exercise. If you hate to exercise try it for only 15 minutes a day at first, then a 1/2-hour. Keep in mind that while you are exercising you are burning calories and not eating. Also, it will be easier if you chose an activity that you enjoy.

2. Find a friend

It is always good to have support when you are trying to lose weight. Find a friend who wants to lose weight and compare notes, weigh-in together and maybe even have a contest.

3. Use weights

Working out weights will build muscle and raise your metabolism so you will burn more calories. Also, muscle takes up less space than fat so you will be smaller ( but probably weigh more).

4. Eat fewer carbs

Don't eat as much bread and pasta and you will see a difference.

5. Set a goal

Set a deadline to lose the weight and write it down. For example, ' By Dec 14/04 I will weigh 150 lbs or less'. Put it somewhere you will see it daily.

6. Give up soda

If you drink a soda or 2 a day you are adding empty calories. If you find it hard to stop completely, cut back at first and drink water instead.

7. Grill or boil

Avoid fried meat, grill and use lots of spices. You will get used to it and probably enjoy it more.

8. Don't buy junk food

When you go shopping, don't go on an empty stomach and you will be less likely to buy junk food. Keep your home 'junk food free' so you won't be tempted to indulge.

9. Eat breakfast

Consume most of your calories early in the day and always eat breakfast. Don't eat after 8pm and not only will you avoid those added calories but you will sleep better.

10. Give yourself a treat

When you tell yourself that you can't have something you want it more. Give yourself a treat once a day ( ie. half a cookie) and you won't feel you are missing out.

11. Use smaller plates

Trick yourself into believing that you are eating more by using a smaller plate.

12. Drink lots of water

Drink water when you are feeling hungry and you will get that 'full' feeling.

13. Don't eat everything on your plate

Many times we eat just because it's there. Pay attention to when you have had enough.

14. Eat five or six meals a day

Eating more frequently will keep you from getting too hungry.

15. Plan your workout sessions

Write your workout sessions in your journal or planner.

16. Stay away from fad diets

Fad diets don't work.

If you lose weight fast chances are that you will gain it back ( and more) just as fast. It takes time to put it on and time to take it off.

17. Do several workouts a day

While you are watching TV do crunches and leg lifts.

18. Measure your food

If you decide to have junk food for a snack - be sure to measure and control what you eat.

19. Keep pre-cut vegetables

...and ward off those cravings.

20. Create Good Habits

It is a known fact that when we do something twenty-one times it becomes a habit. Create good eating habits.

You know I am getting fed up with people who cheat. That seems to be the norm these days. I am having a hard time trusting right now. My friends are getting cheated on and I have recently been the victim of it myself. People who cheat really hit a nerve with me. Why can you not just be honest? I mean are you afraid someone is going to be upset if you don't want to see them anymore? Well how the hell do you think they are gonna feel when they catch you cheating?? How are YOU going to feel then?

The guy I was seeing got off a little easy in my opinion. Now I have forgiven him, but I no longer see him either. And trust me I have not forgotten. I hate seeing anyone hurt, especially my friends. I will include myself in on that too though. I have been asked out by two very married men lately, and what gets me is they know that I know they are married. That is an insult to me. That they would think I would go for that blows my mind. Because I am not like that and I would never lower myself to do that, sorry!

This one guy asked me out and I asked him up front, are you married and are you seeing anyone else right now? The answer was no and no. I had my suspicions, he never wore a wedding ring thought so I agreed. I went out with him once and only once. Because he couldn't keep his hands to himself and I knew what he was after. Getting smarter the older I get. One week later, after that date I found out he was very married and had two kids! I found out from no other than his babysitter. He didn't know I knew her, and now who feels like an idiot and a jerk?

It isn't just men either, women cheat a lot also. I will not chase another woman's man or husband. I have never done that. I don't believe in it. I would like to think no woman would do that especially since it is done to us so much, but guess again. That really irks me too, if I don't do it, I expect the same respect. It seems to me that younger women do this because they get a little kick out of it, if the men take the bait they are just as bad. I have had some friends of mine set their men up just to see if they would fall for it, and usually guess what? They do.

I just don't understand why you can't be honest about your feelings. If you don't want to see that person anymore than just tell them. If you want to see them and see other people too be honest and let them know you don't want to be serious with one person. That way they can decide if they want to stay involved or not. It really isn't fair to the other person for them not to know what is really going on.

Yes if your honest they may decide to not see you anymore but if your honest they may change their mind later on down the road. Don't cause somebody to have trust issues because you can't be honest. If you lie and they find out, more than likely your done and over with, and you deserve what you get.

I detest being lied to and played, you get one chance with me. Cheating becomes a vicious cycle. You play then they play, then that person plays, around and around we go. It will come back on you what goes around comes around. It is wrong and we all need to stop doing it. We need to look out for each other. Just consider what I am saying.

Big blind with my jack-three off suit, I found myself able to see a free flop as the action was checked back to me. Typically, jack-three off suit is a hand I, or any other poker player with the slightest knowledge of the game would not even look twice at, but when the flop of communal cards comes out jack-eight-three, it is a very pleasant surprise. I checked the action, meaning that I did not bet, trying to slow play my two-pair. The action was checked around and the turn revealed yet another three, giving me a full house (three of a kind and two of a kind). I checked again, acting like I had nothing. This time Joel, a very skilled poker player in my opinion, bet.

Normally I would take a second to think of what he could have, and figure out my odds of winning, but this time I didn't have to. Only pocket jacks, meaning that my opponent has two jacks in his hand, could beat me, and I was confident that he did not have that since he did not raise the pot pre-flop.

I could only hope that he had a high pair or a high flush draw (a flush is five cards of the same suit) so that I would be paid off. I re-raised quickly and without hesitation.

Joel took a second, looked at me, and asked "How much do you have left?" meaning that he was contemplating putting me all-in.

Inside, I was overjoyed at the possibility of doubling my money off of this hand. I counted out my chips in what I thought was a completely normal, calm fashion. It came out to be around twelve dollars which Joel had covered easily. In my mind I thought "Here it comes, time to get paid." But I was shocked to hear Joel say "Not this time, I put you on jack-three." I watched in horror as he folded his hand. Never before had I been so distraught over a hand, and the strange thing was that I had won that hand. I had to know how Joel had played his losing hand so well, and how he had read me like that.

I knew then that if I did not improve my game, I would always be an intermediate poker player, and I would miss out on a large sum of money over many hands that would be doomed to go like that one.

Poker fever caught my group of friends back home on Long Island in April of 2004. We began playing cash games for $10.00 and for the most part it has remained that way except for the occasional $20.00 game. I wasn't very good at all to start, but as time went on, I learned what hands to play, and when to fold them. I managed to get by like that for quite a while, and even became very good at playing my own hands, allowing me to do well against less experienced players. It was the games full of hands like the one against Joel that made me realize that being descent at playing my own hand just isn't good enough in many games.

After that game I went to Joel and asked him how he knew that I had a good hand. He told me that it was a combination of things. He said that he could tell that I was trying to be calm and especially passive during the hand, and that my hands were shaking slightly. He said that I counted out my chips slowly and quietly trying not to make any noise. He said that all of this is contrary to how I play when I am either bluffing, or am not sure that my hand is best. He said that when I, and most people for that matter, are bluffing, they count out their chips in a loud and aggressive manner, sub-consciously trying to intimidate their opponent. He later told me that there are different stages of poker knowledge.

1: Knowing your hand and how to play it.

2: Reading what other people have.

3: Reading what other people think that you have.

4: Reading what other people think that you think that they have.

I decided to try to improve on the first three of those steps, and believed that doing so would drastically improve my game as a whole.

One of the first and most important things that I learned had to do with when and how I bet. I learned that it is important to change the pace of my bets so that they are not predictable, and to raise the pot before the flop with lesser hands on occasion. The goal is to bluff when you have everyone believing that you don't bluff, and to have a hand when people think that you are bluffing. I also learned not to bet my cards value. This means not betting $1.00 for a low pair, $2.00 for a high pair, and so on, consistently. Doing this allows your opponents to have a fairly accurate guess as to what cards you are holding. For example, this could leave you at a huge disadvantage if you consistently bet the same amount with two face cards. If the flop comes out all low cards, a smart opponent might have called your raise with low cards knowing that if there were no face cards on the flop, he would have a huge advantage.

Reading what other people have depends on many different things. The first thing that I realized that I should do in any game is try to determine what type of players my opponents are. I learned how important it is to see who is loose with their money, who is tight with their money, who bluffs a lot, and who rarely bluffs. When it comes to reading their bets, I basically need to look for all of the things that I try to conceal for myself, such as betting patterns, and opponents only raising to their cards value. I also learned to look for tells, such as the ones that Joel saw on me. These include changes in pace or mood, facial expressions, shaking hands, looking at their chips right after the flop. A tell could be any unconscious action that gives away the strength of your hand.

Reading what other people think that you have depends largely on how you play your hand. I learned that you can purposely bet a certain way in order to make your opponents think you have something different. You can also give off false tells and signals. A simple but effective example of deceptive betting is the check raise. If you check on your strong hand, your opponents will think that you do not have anything strong. You hope that they will bet into you with a weaker hand or a bluff so that you can re-raise them. Ideally they will already be pot-committed, meaning that they have invested too many chips into the pot to fold. They will be forced to call your re-raise with their weak hand, paying you off. One night, a couple of weeks after the disturbing hand against Joel, and after I became interested in all of these concepts, I found myself at a table comprised mostly of people I didn't know, in a different building. We were also playing for $20.00 up from the usual $10.00 for me. From the start, I paid close attention to the type of players that my new opponents were, and what betting habits they had. One thing that I noticed that became particularly useful to me was that two opponents to my left would frequently call intermediate bets chasing a flush or straight draw. In this particular hand I was dealt pocket seven's. The pot was raised a small amount before the flop, and I decided to just call. It was just me and the two players to my left for this hand. The flop could not have been better for me. It came out seven of clubs, jack of clubs, jack of diamonds, giving me a full house. I was also excited at the possibility of getting paid off by someone with three jacks or someone that would eventually catch a flush. I checked my hand and tried to give off the subtle signals that I was disappointed with the flop. The action was checked around and out came the turn. It was a six of hearts. I wasn't the happiest person ever seeing this card because it would not help anyone get their flush. I made an intermediate bet, the type that would be called by anyone on a flush draw and would be re-raised if someone had trip jacks. I tried to make them think that I had either a single six or a single seven in my hand.

Both of my opponents called, and out came the river. It was a two of clubs. Money! I checked trying to act intimidated at the possibility of a flush.

The opponent directly to my left raised, and the next opponent re-raised. I was ecstatic. I re-raised both of them everything that I had left. The opponent to my left folded; apparently his flush was only nine high. The other opponent called, and showed me his ace high flush. I showed him my full house and his bad news. "Nice hand," he said, "nice hand." And it was.

Getting enough of the good fats will help you lose fat, build muscle, and recover faster from your workouts. In addition, it has myriad health benefits, including being good for your heart.

Omega-3 fatty acids increase the size of your cells' fuel-burning furnaces so your metabolic rate rises and you burn more calories every minute of every day.

Omega-3's also help your body's sensitivity to insulin. This helps your body store less fat. In addition, the fat you do store is more readily and easily converted into energy and burned during activity.

We should not assume that simply because we board every cargo ship from certain countries that we are safe, these things could come on any type of ship or ultra large yacht. And the technology is well known, used in sport marine, luxury marine, military worldwide. How can you stop a hydrofoil traveling at 100 knots from entering a harbor?

One way is to have large high-pressure tanks under water at the mouth of the river or harbor. Similar to giant cylinder propane tanks only the width of the mouth of the inlet, if you fail to hit the hydrofoil with conventional defense weapons, you release all the gas as the hydrofoil enters the harbor. The tanks can be pipelines which are in use, with quick release valves opening upward, the can be closed off tanks with CO2, Oxygen, Hydrogen, methane or other such gas. The gas as it escapes creates a cavity and the hydrofoil or skimmer craft falls as it would over a waterfall tumbling downward. Then the water fills in over it and even if the weapon of mass destruction goes off, it does so underwater which provides one more layer of protection. This is a last resort defense mechanism able to high-speed boats, skimmer craft, hydrofoils and medium sized fast moving ships. Of course this is only one possible way to stop such attacks as we also have missiles, guns, cannons, etc. at the military shipyards, harbors and inlets.

First things first, get that case off your PC. This is usually done by removing the screws on the back. Don't remove the ones near your power supply! This will cause your power supply to fall out. Simply remove the screws along the side that seem to be holding the case to the frame. Usually, this is about 6-9 screws. This will remove both sides. If you are aiming on only removing one side (sometimes this is best, as you only need to service one side) then remove the three screws holding the one side on. (For clone PCs. For IBM/Compaqs, refer below). After you've got the screws off either the one side, or both sides, simply slide the sides off towards the front side (the side where the power button is).

If you've got an IBM or Compaq, you will need to remove all the screws holding the case onto the back, and then employ one or both methods. Some IBM PCs require you to "yank" the case off. Don't be rough - just remove the screws, then hold the PC in both hands and pull the case towards you, in the direction facing the front. Some of these can be quite annoying to get loose. The other method is using push tabs - some PC cases have these, so if you are having trouble, look for these puppies.

Setting goals is wonderful; it confirms that we've taken those first awkward steps towards attaining what we desire in our lives. The simple fact that you've taken the time to plan out what you want to achieve puts you in a distinct class.

Amazingly very few people take the time to keep a running list of goals. Sadly, even fewer people actually work their goals. So take the time right now to give yourself a little pat on the back! You deserve it.

You're part of the elite group of people who have chosen to take an active role in their own success. If the whole idea of goal setting (and goal achieving) is a new one to you, don't worry; the important thing is that you've decided to take the bull by the horns and get started!

Here's a technique to add substance to the goals you've set! Remember, the more real the goal is in your mind, the easier your subconscious mind can get around your desires and jump into action and start helping you realize them!

Another technique is to imagine yourself sitting in a movie theater. See your goals and dreams playing out before you on a large screen. Find a technique that works for you (the key word being what works for you).

Hopefully from the example above you see the difference that a little visualization can play in making our goals more "concrete" in our minds? To say I want to find my dream job is one thing, but to identify it and imagine myself doing this job (and taking the necessary steps to become employed) creates an added energy that will propel you towards making it a reality!

A working manager needs more than time management.

That old saying, "Dance with the one that brought you to the ball," came to mind as I received a reality jolt recently.

Let me share with you that jolting insight. I was in transition away from managing several groups of technicians and professionals to more personal hands-on production management. My self-image and reputation lead me to assume that simply putting in the same hours in my usual efficient manner would do the trick. So, I continued tracking my time.

Wrong assumption!

It was necessary to get back to basics or, to use the wisdom of that old saying, to dance with the one who got me from there to here. Namely, tracking specific actions that produce results instead of tracking time spent on specific and general activity.

What I was suspecting was painfully true. Effective results were falling short of my own standards and objectives.

I replaced my time managing controls with production controls. My daily discipline, attitudes and focus changed immediately and so did the output. I was no longer deceiving myself by playing that look-how-hard-I'm-trying game

It's a humbling experience when the manager needs the same supervision as salespeople, technicians and other such producers. It's embarrassing when a manager applies to oneself the same stringent supervisory methods he or she once used on salespersons and other responsible persons working in critical profit centers.

While this piece is directed to the owner/manager who plays a hands-on role in a small business, it serves as a reminder to all managers who could be due for a comparative review of daily actions, time use and actual output.

Now, let me share with you the simple control device that did the turn-around for me.

It was set up as a spreadsheet. In the first column I listed the items to be produced, in the second column were the objectives (e.g: 10 / week, 0.2/day, 12 in can, etc.) and to the right columns headed with dates of the workdays for the month into which you tally your production. In the far right columns are totals and evaluation against your objectives.

The vertical tally gives you a quick view of your daily output.

You can construct this on your personal workstation, laptop or palm device. I opted for a printout for recording my single stroke [|||] tally because I was working at my desktop computer. Results can be entered on my spreadsheet or into my database later if I want more extensive analyses or records.

This is especially valuable for the manager assuming the responsibility of selling to key accounts and may have excused himself or herself from the scrutiny of a sales manager.

It's a good idea to occasionally review all of your functions for any possible lapses into some gold-bricking activities. It pays to ask yourself, "Who's managing the manager?" Should you find a weakness, you have my empathy as it can be a humbling and/or embarrassing experience. Take heart - it's rewarded with valuable improvements in your own productivity along with improved self-esteem.

Why Forex Traders Plan To Fail Before They Even Place Their First Trade & How You Can Know It & .... Preliminary Steps to Developing Your Self Confidence.

Have you heard the wise saying that a trader who fails to plan, plans to fail? I have, and I was once that trader! However, did you know that even though traders who have constructed a plan, which incorporates their trading stategy (their "edge"), they have a plan that is likely to fail?

If we look at all traders who participate

in the market: we have one group that fails to plan and therefore plans to fail; another group whose plan is failed; and a third group who properly plans and therefore does not fail.

Is it any wonder that the success rate for forex traders is so slim?

Well it doesn't have to be.

Here's a list of reasons why those whose plan is destined for failure fail:

1. They become emotionally attached to their ideas about how the market should be with minimal or inadequate testing;

2. They fall in love with their back-tested net profit results without fully understanding other key statistical data;

3. They don't admit they're plan is wrong.

Let's explore each point in a little more detail.

1. Becoming emotionally attached to your ideas without adequate results

Most new traders when they realize the importance of obtaining a trading plan and sticking to that plan immediately begin to use the knowledge they have been taught and haphazardly throw it all together into what they deem their "trading plan".

When they are questioned on whether they have a trading plan most of these traders answer with an unequivocal "Yes!".

Most of these traders are destined for failure because their strategy is untested. They rely on blind faith to guide them through the trading jungle to make their untold millions. Would you walk from one length of the Amazon jungle to the other blind-folded? Of course not! You'll have to watch out for all the snakes, tarantulas, and other creepy things that go bump in the night, so why would you approach trading in the same fashion? I mean all you're really doing is placing the blind-fold on your capital!

Why do traders do this?

Because it's easy. That's right... it's easy. They don't

need to learn a computer language to type their system into some piece of software that will take them the better part of 6 months to a year to learn, and they don't have to spend any money on buying historical data. Therefore it's easy and it's cheap and it also conserves time!

So does success meet lazy people like this?

Not many! However I will admit that it does meet a fortunate few - only those lucky enough to start their trading during roaring markets where even a monkey can make money! To repeat again: don't wear the blind-fold. Your success may be great at the start, but given time and trades, you'll be the one out of the game - having depleted all your capital.

So what do you do if you KNOW that your method is untested?

If you have the time, the money and the learning capacity I would strongly encourage you to purchase some back-testing software (such as Wealth-Lab Developer), acquire some forex data, ask heaps of

questions on the Wealth-Lab forum on how to code your ideas and within 3-6 months you'll be safely coding your own forex system and testing adequately.

If you do not have the time, the money nor the learning capacity I would strongly suggest that you manually write down your system into clearly defined steps that you MUST follow. Then, after opening a DEMO forex account you would trade your system according to the rules you have set out. Trading your rules until about 20 trades have been completed.

After traders obtain their results from their testing period they unfortunately look at only one figure and make a rash conclusion about the system based on that one performance figure, namely, the net profit. This then leads us into the next problem of why traders plans are failed prior to placing their first live trade...

2. They fall in love with the net profit result and no longer question it any further!

The net profit is only one statistic among thousands, however, to keep things simple we will look at the top 3 results that you need to make sure you fully understand.

Here are the other statistical pieces of data that you should look at when your system has completed its testing period:

If you have made a nice profit, but have only had 3 trades during the testing period you do not have a sufficient sample space to arrive at any safe conclusions. Can you imagine what would happen to Neil Armstrong if NASA had only done 3 computations on how they would arrive on the moon??!! If it's not good for NASA then it's probably not good for you either, however, as NASA do zillions of computations you would only need to conduct about 20 trades as the bare minimum before you can arrive at any safe conclusions;

II. What was your money management procedure during the testing phase? This is by far the most important point, however, you need to make sure your system is properly working prior to even embarking on this difficult area (hence the reason why it is a CLOSE second to the above point). Be sure you fully understand what I am about to explain (read it several times to absorb it if need be)... If you test a method whereby you rely on a percentage amount of capital on a trade you can be biasing your results!

How?

Let us look at the following comparison sheet where we plot 21 trades with their pip return (we'll assume that each pip = US$1), and compare the returns against using 10 contracts per trade, 10% capital per trade, or 2% risk per trade...

Now as you can see from the results they can easily be doctored according to the different type of money management

technique you use and what variable you decide to use it on (i.e. who is to say that we not use 20 contracts per trade, or 20% capital, or 5% risk per trade - all of these would inflate the net return figures).

It is best when you trade to stay at a fixed quantity. If you use any results that require a percentage calculation of the equity balance prior to the trade quantity being calculated you will BIAS the last trades more than the trades at the start. Hence, using a fixed quantity throughout the entire sample is one of the true indications of whether your system is profitable or not.

III. What was the drawdown? This is the largest peak to trough distance on your equity curve. In other words, if you were to enter in on the day the equity curve made a peak, how much would you have lost if you bailed out at the lowest point? To test this manually you would obtain an equity curve peak trace how far the equity curve goes down until it moves higher that the peak you started from - the lowest point made between these two points will be your trough figure which you will then subtract from your starting peak figure. The figure with the largest % loss would be your drawdown.

You would then need to look at this drawdown figure and determine whether or not it fits your risk profile. Would you be okay mentally if your account was down the drawdown % figure? If not, then you're going to have to re-create another system. As a rule I don't like systems that generate more than 30% drawdown.

One other statistic that incorporates drawdown that I like to check to determine whether the system is profitable or not is the recovery factor. The recovery factor divides the net profit by the drawdown (without the negative sign). As an example, if the net profit were $5,659 and the drawdown were -$3,542 dividing the net profit by the drawdown would result in a recovery factor of 1.597 (get rid of the minus sign). I generally prefer systems to have this statistic above 3.

So even though we have created our system that fits our personality and risk tolerance level well trades can still fail by not heeding the third and final statement...

3. Don't fall in love with the system

Most traders once they have designed a system cannot believe that their system is making a loss, or worse yet, a loss greater than the system's historical drawdown.

So, to combat this they dig their head in the sand hoping that the problem will go away. Just as trades fall in love with their position, at their own peril, falling in love with their system is also to their detriment.

Treat this as a business with your system as one of your salesmen. If the salesman is costing more than he is bringing in then you need to fire him and find another one.

How do you know if your system is no good?

As a rule I look at the historical drawdown of my system and add 10%. As an example, if my system had historical drawdown of 20% once the system reached 20% x 1.1 = 22% I would stop trading this system and move onto another. And sometimes you can still trade the same system, just with different variables, or a minor tweak.

Be sure that you fully understand the implications presented to you in this article. Trading is a business, therefore conduct it like one, as it is one of the most difficult endeavors you could ever undertake.

For instance, if you think something, then to your subconscious mind, that is so. It does not analyze facts; if you think it, then it accepts it as fact. If you think that others can control your mind, then for you, that is true. But only because you allow the idea to be a fact for you.

-Anyone can be hypnotized. What happens when you're watching television and someone tries to get your attention? Have you ever been driving down the road, only to look around and see that you've gone much further than you thought? When you focus your concentration to the point where everything else is screened out, then you are in a state of hypnosis. Hypnosis narrows your focus and concentration. You do that when you are intent in a conversation, or performing any activity that decreases your awareness of things outside of yourself.

Mobile Detailers are required to prevent water from entering a storm drain while washing and detailing cars. Most professional detailers know this but few understand where these laws came from. Here is the history behind where these laws and rules came from.

It all it all started many years ago when Congress passed the Federal Clean Water Act of 1972. This was in response to major pollution issues involving polluting the nation's waterways from factories, strip mining and sewage treatment plants or lack thereof. It was actually quite a problem. It was an ecosystem disaster causing disease and death to wildlife and some people.

When it was discovered just how bad the problem really was, the Federal Government empowered the states to take care of the issues within their state. The states enacted state laws to help fix the problem. Meanwhile, the Federal Government tightened standards forcing states to tighten their standards or be in violation. With the threat of withholding federal monies to the states, the state continued to make more and more laws. Industry obviously wasn't happy and even government agencies were unable to comply. So, target dates were enacted to give time for everyone to comply. Overnight environmental consulting firms sprung up along with a whole new industry of environmental equipment and product manufactures, many of whom weren't in compliance themselves.

The State of California was the first to adopt rules for mobile washers and surface cleaners. They did this after they divided the state into nine different regions realizing that each region had different pollution problems based on industry types in the areas, shortly there after mobile washers were identified as a non-point source discharge and they decided to stop these wash water flows in to the storm drains. These nine regions were called &Regional Water Quality Control Districts', RWQCD. These were all controlled by the State Board that was defined by the Federal Clean Water Act as the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB).

The SWRCB was formed in California and is commonly called &The State Board'. The State Board regulates Water Quality Control, which is any activity or factor that might affect the quality of waters of the state and includes the prevention and correction of water pollution and nuisance. This sounds very encompassing and the State Board has too much power. Luckily, now they understand the issues enough to make an intelligent decision.

Recently, the State Water Quality Control Districts ten years ago the counties to submit for approval and receive permits to discharge the same waters they've been discharging for years. These permits were called NPDES permits. This stands for National Pollution Discharge Elimination System. Usually the counties will assign an existing department to work on this permit. More likely than not, it is the county's Flood Control Department. Unfortunately, this part of the county deals with permits for land development, bridges, infrastructures, etc. Until now, they knew very little about pollution. The NPDES permits are approved by the state for local county urban runoff discharges. Each city in each county through municipal codes is supposed to pass ordinances and a plan for controlling their local runoff/pollution. The county remains responsible to the state and the states to the Federal Government. The NPDES requirements are an offspring of the EPA, Environmental Protection Agency even though they are enforced, permitted and regulated locally by cities, counties and states.

Many municipalities have unique ordinances dealing with various types of runoff. Some of these ordinances were written before lawmakers really knew what they were doing. Many, therefore, may be on the books but not ever enforced.

The basic rule of thumb is very simple; "Do Not Allow Wash Water Run-off to enter a storm drain, gutter or allow flows into a creek, river, lake or the Ocean. Block the water, dam it up or divert it, then all it to evaporate, flow into vegetation or vacuum it up. Simple, do it right, stay out of trouble and don't pollute.

One of the critical drivers of business success is having a unique competitive advantage. Most managers understand that to attract a larger share of the market, or find enough customers prepared to pay a premium price, they must provide something of greater value than their competition. For most managers, competitive advantage boils down to providing superior quality and service. Think about it. Is this what you are aiming for?

Now, striving for quality and service sounds to me like what Americans call "motherhood and apple pie." The purity of these things has an appeal that you can't argue with. But I have a problem with the concept. You see, whenever I ask my clients what their competitive advantage is, realizing that there can be only one "cheapest" competitor, they almost invariably tell me that it is quality and service. The trouble I have with that is, if everyone provides quality and service, where is the competitive advantage?

The problem with just saying quality and service is that the concepts are too vague. Think about it. Can you give me a definition of the word "quality"? It's not that easy is it. There is something intangible about "quality" because it is a relative term. When I ask my clients what they mean by "quality" or "service," they have the same difficulty. The danger is that their idea of quality is something less than their customer's. Unless you can define exactly what "quality" and "service" means to your customers, you don't have a tangible competitive advantage.

What does "quality" mean for your product or service? How is that different from any of your competitors? You need to get very specific. Merely generalising about quality and service doesn't give customer's anything to go on. Can you prove your product is better, stronger, faster, more reliable? Just presenting quality and service in general terms isn't enough to demonstrate a clear competitive advantage. Customers don't believe vague claims and they don't believe you, unless you can back up your statement with irrefutable facts. The same goes for service. What does better service mean?

Is it faster, more personal, more user friendly? How can you support your claims?

Whether you use these statements in your advertising or selling situations, statements that are specific and verifiable will always be more believable and therefore more effective, than vague generalizations. So if you promote your product or service on the basis of superior quality, start working on defining exactly why it is superior and provide measurable proof of its superiority. This will achieve one of two things. First, you may find out that your product or service isn't really that much different or better than your competitor. That's OK. At least you now know and can get to work on finding out how to make it superior. Secondly, if you can define your superiority and provide measurable proof, now you really have a competitive advantage which gives you a unique selling proposition to advertise.

Look at the following claims. "Our product is the best on the market." Or. "Our product was shown in scientific trials to be 37% more effective in ..... than competing products." Which do you think would be more effective in advertising?

If you can't test your product or service to measure its superiority, you can provide independent verification of your claims in other ways. For example, using client testimonials is a very effective way of overcoming customer skepticism. When independent people talk about your product or service in a positive way, describing the benefits they have received, it is much more believable than when you say the same things yourself. It is even better if your customer is specific .

So, what is your competitive advantage? Don't say quality and service. That just doesn't mean anything to your market. Get specific, get the facts and be believable. Then use that unique selling proposition in all your promotions and selling activities to drive home your competitive advantage. You'll see a difference in your results that makes it worth the effort.

The capacity of a voice mail system depends on the hours of memory it has available. A system with a large number of ports and traffic may need a large number of hours, where as a system with low traffic will need fewer hours. 2. Many older phone systems may not support a modern voice mail system.

3. Adequate memory.
Most voice mail systems have an adequate amount of memory, usually more than you will ever need. When selecting an appropriate voice mail system it is important that you enquire about the systems memory capacity, because some suppliers now provide relatively inexpensive voice mail systems that do not have a hard disk for message storage. All the messages and greetings are stored on chips, which seriously affects the amount of memory available. These small inexpensive voice mail systems are only really suitable to companies or offices with only two or three phone extensions and not recommended for a growing company requiring a fully featured voice mail system.

4. Expansion and how much it will cost.
When choosing a voice mail system, you need to make sure that any quotes gathered from systems suppliers include a cost for expansion. If you decide upon a voice mail system that is only sufficient for your current requirements, then consider what will happen if and when your office/company expands, and the need for more voice mail capacity outstrips that of your current system. You will also need to ask any prospective supplier how long they will honour their quotation for the expansion of your voice mail system.

5. Remote maintenance costs.
Before purchasing a suitable voice mail system from any supplier, you need to find out what their costs are for remote maintenance. All voice mail systems will at some time require a little care and feeding, which more often than not can only be provided by the system supplier.

It is important that all users attend the training sessions of any new voice mail system. Though voice mail systems are not usually difficult to use, some staff may require one to one or even extra tuition. When evaluating the training cost section of any proposed voice mail system suppliers quotation, it is important to ascertain that a low price does not mean a low standard of system training.

It is advisable that you acquire a cost for any future additional training sessions that may be required from time to time, as staff come and go and for the re-training of existing staff.

The sinage marketplace is competitive! Consequently, some companies are going to focus on price and neglect quality. I will try to keep things simple and cut to the chase. The consumer needs to weigh price versus use. For example, if you are looking for an indoor banner, keep the weight to 10 oz. I also recommend hems (sewing the banner so it will be reinforced) and grommets (metal rings placed about every two feet on the banner - usually only on the top and bottom) to make sure the banner is supported sufficiently when hung. But there are caveats. I know some business men and women that use their company trade show banner over and over again as needed. In this case, a 10 oz banner will not be able to handle the continuous wear and tear resulting from rolling it up, packing, etc. I strongly recommend a 13 oz banner for these situations.

Outdoor banners must contend with the elements. Not only does this include storms but also the everyday pounding from the sun and wind. Different parts of the country have different variations in the elements which must be considered. The sign industry was booming here in Florida after the 2004 hurricane season. The only common sense thing to do when a hurricane is approaching is to take your outdoor banner down! Make contingency plans to be able to take your banner down quickly and easily when any major storm is approaching (I suggest twine on the four corners or rope on the top and bottom so the sign can be untied quickly).

For most purposes, a 13 oz banner will do fine for outdoor use, but make sure it has hems (double hem) and grommets. If it is digitally printed, you may want to have the sign laminated. If cheap inks are used, their life expectancy will be diminished substantially. Make sure your sign company uses top quality UV inks. You can generally expect 2 to 3 years from digitally printed signs without lamination and an additional 2 to 3 years with lamination. The sun is the enemy here and inks will eventually fade. Lamination helps protect the fading.

If you are in a traditionally windy area (e.g., Chicago or the northwest) or you have an exceptionally large banner (greater than 10 sq. ft.) you have to consider wind vents (flaps) or mesh (tiny holes in the vinyl). I once refused to sell a 3' x 20' street banner to a customer who insisted on buying the sign without wind vents, because I knew it would not handle even brisk breezes.

Finally, it seems that many sign companies will do a double sided banner on any material. But this is not fair to the consumer. Only 16 oz banner material is thick enough (and opaque enough) to prevent the sun from shining through it. If the sun shines through a banner, the other side can be seen and the banner message is lost in the sun. I can't tell you how many banners I have seen where the sun shines through them. Most consumers don't understand and go for the lower price. I refuse to print a double sided outdoor banner on anything but 16 oz and above and your sign company should too.

1. "What do you mean, you hate to travel?"

Have you and your spouse actually sat down and discussed how each of you envisions retirement? If your dreams are completely opposite of your spouse's, both of you are going to be disappointed. Honestly talk about them before you get the gold watch. Be creative and open to compromise, so both of your dreams can come true.

2. "You mean, you're here ALL the time, now?"

Spending all this quality time together may seem like a wonderful idea, but remember, you both have daily routines, some of which may have been 30 years in the making. Also, you're not used to spending 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in each other's company. Experienced retirees say this is such a big adjustment, they'd recommend pre-retirement counseling along the lines of marriage counseling! Recognize and respect the needs both of you have for space, as well as each other's routines.

3. Money matters, and so does peace of mind.

If you haven't already, consult with a financial advisor to discuss how to best manage your assets for the long haul, as people are living longer and longer. Revisit your health and life insurance policies. Update or write your will, and consider a Living Will or Advanced Health Care Directive to help guide your loved ones through a difficult time.

4. Use it or lose it.

It's not just a clich�½. Maintaining some level of regular physical exercise, whether it's walking, gardening, or golf, can help improve balance, and retain flexibility. If you feel like you need an ejector seat in your Lazy-Boy, start small, but start, before you solidify!

5. Where did I put my keys?

What's good for the body is good for the mind. Studies have shown that working your mind is key to staying mentally sharp. Experts recommend a daily crossword puzzle, or a game of Scrabble�½ along with your vitamins and apple a day.

6. Set limits.

"Oh, Mom can do that; she's retired." Your time doesn't become less valuable once you retire - although others may seem to think so. There's nothing wrong with helping out, so long as you're not ignoring yourself. Remember to respect your own time and plans; and soon others will, too.

7. Clean out your closets.

As many retirees and empty-nesters downsize into apartments or smaller homes, they realize that they just don't have the room for everything anymore. Rather than waiting until the last minute and feeling overwhelmed with the size of the job, start now and take small bites. Clean out your closets and put together a bag for the Salvation Army or Goodwill. Give that old table to a college kid, just starting out. Who knows, you might find something worth taking on "Antiques Roadshow!" Plus, your kids will thank you for it.

8. "So, what do you do?"

Ever get the feeling that people stop listening once you tell them you're retired? One of the hardest parts of retirement life is realizing how your job made you feel appreciated, competent and maybe even powerful. Your talents, skills and gifts didn't evaporate when you walked out the door on your last day. The first step is recognizing what you got out of the job - it was more than just having a place to go every day. Step 2 is finding new outlets for all you have to offer.

9. Try something new.

Now's the perfect time to live out that long hidden dream, learn a new skill, take a class or pick up that hobby you dropped because you just didn't have the time. If anything seems the least bit interesting, learn more about it. Become an expert in something. Learn to cook Indian food. Try Tai Chi. If you don't like it, try something else!

10. It's not just about you.

As mentioned above, your talents, skills and gifts don't have a limited shelf life. Consider using them to give back to the world. Your most valuable asset is your time - and your church, your local volunteer agencies and a whole host of others are waiting in line. Check out www.volunteermatch.org or check your local paper for something that intrigues you - even if it's completely different than anything else you've ever done. It's never too late to start on your personal legacy.

Golf Instructional Videos

I'm a marketing consultant and at one of my client-companies, a
company that, in less than 10 years, has gone from a $10 million
to a $100 million dollar business one of the people I work with
frequently has jokingly given herself the title, 'Vice President,
Back-End.'

Although that clearly opens her up to be the butt of many jokes,
it does very accurately describe her very, very important area of
responsibility, in direct marketing parlance. At least 80% of the
company's profitability depends on her contributions.

End Back Pain Fast!!

If the term "back-end" is new to you, it means everything you
sell your customers after their initial purchase (that first
order is called the "front-end"). For instance, let's say you
sell instructional video tapes to golfers on how to play better.
You advertise in golf magazines and your lead product is a $25
video on putting strategies. That's your "front-end" because
that's what people buy first. But then once people purchase that
first video, you send them a catalog offering them over 50 other
golf videos ranging in price from $50 to $99. Those follow-on
videos are your "back-end."

In many businesses, there is a relatively brief period of time
during which there are significant, exciting profits on the
front-end, that is the very first sale to a customer.

But that happy situation dissolves over time, as you "cream" the
market. And, as you go deeper and deeper into a market, the cost
of making the first sale (acquiring a customer) goes up and up.
For instance, in the above example of the golf videos the first
time you run a magazine ad you might pull 100 orders. But if you
keep running it every month, your order volume will probably drop
off steadily. Within six months, you'd be lucky to be selling 30
videos from the same ad in the same magazine. As some point, it
gets so high it is no longer practical to advertise and sell that
product to that market.

Nothing is forever. This fact of life is what mandates being
smart about making all the money that you can from the back-end.

The good news is that your satisfied customers are probably
willing to buy other things from you -- and they don't even have
to be your own products/services. You can make deals with other
companies to offer their products/services to your customers in
exchange for a piece of the action.

For instance, let's go back to our example of the golf video
company. You might do a "joint venture" with a manufacturer of
special golf clubs which sell for $1,500 a set. You'll mail a
letter to your customers telling them how well these clubs will
improve their golf game and you'll get $750 on each order placed.
If your customers trust you, they'll be much more likely to
respond to your letter than they would be if the golf club
manufacturer mailed to them directly.

Of course you only want to recommend high-quality products and
services which will be of value to your customers. But you get
the idea. You could make similar deals with other companies who
sell what golfers want -- golf apparel, golf trip and excursion
operators, even custom home builders who sell houses near golf
courses. They'd all happily pay you a 'toll' commission to sell
their wares to your customers.

No matter what your business, one of the most valuable assets you
have is a list of satisfied customer, predisposed to buy from you
again. When you control a sizable list of customers who bought
from you, know your name/business name, are happy with what they
bought and with the ensuing relationship ... and are pre-disposed
to read your mail and buy from you again, it's like owning your
own "toll booth."

A pioneer of direct marketing, Harvey Brody, taught me the power
and value of getting into "The Toll Booth Position" and I've been
teaching it for years. Imagine owning your own toll booth on the
highway near your city. Anybody who wants to get to the other
side of that toll booth has to pass through its gates and pay you
money.

As the controller of a responsive customer list, that's exactly
where you are; sitting there in your own toll booth and anybody
who wants to get their appropriate product or service to those
customers you control, has to pay you money.

You can collect a toll through joint ventures, as described above
wherein you do an endorsed mailing to your customers and get a
piece of all sales that result.

Or, if you build a list of 50,000 or more, through outright lists
rentals. I have a number of clients who pay all their overhead
expenses every year just with the checks they get from the list
broker representing their list to others.

I have often paid others to pass through their toll booths ---
and done so cheerfully. I have also been paid by others eager to
get through my toll booth, to my customers, with my endorsement.

In the direct marketing business, it's a well-known fact that
most of the profits is derived from back-end sales to existing
customers. Yet outside that business, I rarely encounter a
company which comes anywhere close to tapping the potential of
establishing their own "toll booth position." Get started
building yours right now and start charging others to go down
your road.

This includes things that are out of sight in your closet, a dresser drawer, or under the bed. Pillows, mattresses, and bedding absorb your energy over time, so when a marriage or live-in relationship ends, it's a good idea to buy new sheets and pillows and even a new mattress if you can afford it, to help you make a fresh start. New bedding is also a good idea if you have been single and lonely for a long time. Pamper yourself during this stage, and try to do at least one thing every day just because it makes you happy.

When you are actively looking for a partner, your key task is to create space for a new romance. If your closets, dresser drawers, and bathroom shelves are filled up with your own stuff, there is no room on an energetic level for someone new to come in.

That's why the best way to attract a new romance is to literally make space for it. Empty out at least one dresser drawer for your next partner's clothes. Make space in the closet, in the bathroom cabinet, and on bookcase shelves. Start with your bedroom, then move on to the rest of the house. Is there room for another person's DVDs and music in your CD rack? Where will your new sweetheart put his or her health supplements, exercise gear, notebook computer? Is there room for another car in your garage, or have you filled that space up with stuff? Make a list of all the areas of your home where your new partner might need some space, and try to free up at least 25 percent of it. If you can't clear 25 percent of the relevant spaces, just do the best you can; your strong intention to create room for a new relationship is the most important factor. When you do connect with your new love, you can look for a more spacious residence together!

When you have met a "likely prospect" and want to nurture that new relationship, your key task is to ensure that your bedroom supports romance. This is a good time to get rid of any clutter blocking the path from the front door of your home to the door of your bedroom. This will help keep the energy in your bedroom fresh and strong. In feng shui, the symbolism of what we see is very important, so make sure your bedroom says "romance" in some way. Focus on these areas: 1) what you first see when you enter the bedroom; 2) the wall across from the foot of the bed; 3) the relationship area of the room (the right-hand corner on the side of the room opposite the door, and/or the SW sector). Just about anything that means romance to you can be appropriate feng shui imagery for your bedroom. Traditional romantic symbols such as hearts, cupids, and pictures of happy couples always work well, as does a faceted feng shui crystal hung in the relationship area or over your bed. Look for opportunities to group objects in pairs, such as placing two pink or red candles or a bud vase with two red silk roses on your bedside table. Pale green is also a good color for new romance.

Although these simple steps are just a few of the many ways you can use feng shui to improve your love luck, they will do a lot to shift the energy of your home. As your environment becomes more welcoming to romance, your own energy will shift as a result. When you are clear in your heart about the kind of love you want, and take action to welcome it into your home, your dream of lasting happiness with a wonderful partner really can come true.

The human brain is very much like a hard drive. If you stop to think of it, they are both filled with billions of tiny bits of information, stored in the memory cells just waiting to be accessed. They both use electrical energy to find those bits and put them together to recreate something that we have placed there. They work on demand, and we expect them to instantly give us what we want.

And frankly, many people abuse both their hard drives and their brains! They fill them up with information and expect them to perform at top efficiency without the benefit of good maintenance. There are some basic support tasks that are essential to the well being of both. If you don't take proper care of both of them, eventually they will fail you.

Both brains and hard drives need to be de-fragged on a regular basis! De-fragmentation means that you allow the machine (brain or hard drive) to rearrange the information that has been stored in it, so that it can find what you need more quickly and efficiently. When bits of information get stored all over the place, with no logical order to it, then it takes a lot longer for the machine to find and reassemble what you need quickly.

Probably, you have your hard drive set up to de-frag itself on a regular basis. It is done automatically, maybe while you sleep. Well, your brain does not have a task-scheduler to take care of this for you! It is busy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. It can't reset itself while you sleep. That is because it is still working on the things that your subconscious is trying to sort out. It is dreaming and remembering and stressing all the while.

So how do you de-frag your brain? Well, it takes three things: rest, relaxation and meditation. If you are a type A personality, then these three things may be totally foreign territory for you! You may be in a high-stress job, or always be taking care of others but never yourself, or you may somehow think that taking care of yourself first is something that you do not deserve. Wrong! If you do not take care of this, it will force the issue. You may get sick, depressed or worse.

Meditation is an excellent way of maintaining your brain. It forces you to sit, relax and do "nothing" for a bit.

Clear Your Clutter, Clear Your Mind

You clear your poor brain of the clutter and the chatter and just let it run free. You do not have to do anything special, really, to meditate; you just find something that transports you! Music works for a lot of people. You can dance if it helps you, or do some drumming. You could get a good meditation tape or CD and listen to that. You could even sign up for a Tai Chi course, or try some yoga. Whatever you decide to do, do it regularly. At least once a week is necessary for the proper de-fragging of the average hard drive and the average brain.

At the very least you should be setting aside some time every week to just do something relaxing. Take a long bubble bath with some candles lit and some soothing music playing. Go sit outside in nature. The trick here is to just DO it, to take the time for yourself no matter what. See that you deserve it and that it is just as important as going to a doctor when you are sick. In fact, it can help keep those doctor visits to a minimum!

And while you are at it, consider getting a good anti-virus too. Your hard drive needs it to protect your information, and your body needs it to keep healthy. Anti-virus for the body means taking better care of you. Eat something healthy, go out and take a walk, and get more sleep! You can find the time to do this if you make it a priority.

If you take care of your hard drive, both the computer type and the body type, your life will improve significantly. Both will run smoothly and have a lot less crashes!

Article:3 - Targeted Stretching

Stretching can be great, but it can also make existing injuries worse or even bring about new ones!

The key to making stretching work for you is knowing which stretches you need to be working on... and just because a muscle feels tight, that doesn't necessarily mean it needs to be stretched.

For example, many people stretch the hamstrings because they feel tight and they think the hamstrings are limiting their flexibility...

the fact is, most of the time the hamstrings are "tight" because they are constantly being pulled / lengthened due to muscle imbalances that tip the pelvis forward.

As you can, when the pelvis tips forward the hamstrings get pulled upward and are constantly held in a stretched position...

And this is why millions of people can stretch their hamstrings every freakin day and never make any improvement in their flexibility....

Are you one of those people?

If you are, you need to stop stretching your hamstrings and find out exactly which muscles you need to be targeting by reading the rest of this article...

Not only does this forward tipping of the pelvis (which is caused by muscle imbalances) keep the hamstrings tight and make it very difficult to make improvements in the muscles flexibility, but it also leads to the following:

�€� increased stress / wear and tear from the ankles all the way up the spine

For example, the forward tipping of the pelvis places uneven pressure on the ankle, knee and hip joints and also many of the vertebrae in the spine.

�€� weakens the hamstrings, inhibits normal functioning and increases the likelihood of hamstring pulls

When the hamstrings are constantly being strained because of the muscle imbalances, the muscle is weak, not able to function as it normally would, prone to injury and without correcting the muscle imbalance recover can take up to 9 months to a year, or longer!

�€� creates excess curvature in the lower and middle spine

This tipping of the pelvis places excessive amounts of abnormal stress on the muscles, vertebrae and discs in the lower and mid spine and this sets you up for potential injuries to the muscles of the lower and middle back...

Plus, it also causes the discs between your vertebrae to wear down and deteriorate much faster than they normally would and this sets you up for degenerative, bulging, protruding and herniated discs along with numerous other spinal conditions like arthritis, spinal stenosis, and the oh so popular sciatica!

This hamstring example is just one of many... muscle imbalances are responsible for nearly every ache, pain, injury and condition out there!

Here are a few more examples of injuries / conditions that are caused by muscle imbalances and can easily be prevented and/or eliminated with targeted stretches and exercises:

�€� upper back and neck pain
�€� shoulder injuries (rotator cuff)
�€� elbow and wrist pain (carpal tunnel, tennis/golfer/baseball elbow, etc)
�€� knee pain (runners knee, chondromalacia, ligament tears, etc)
�€� hip pain (IT band syndrome, bursitis, etc)
�€� ankle pain (Achilles tendonitis, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, etc)

All of these conditions are caused by muscle imbalances and will NOT go away unless you work towards correcting the imbalances... and the only way to know for sure which imbalances are causing your pain or injury is to do a series of physical assessments like the ones covered in our Lose the Back Pain Video which is designed for anyone suffering from back pain or sciatica.

What the heck is a targeted stretch?

This is a question we are asked often and here's the definition we give it:

Targeted Stretch - a stretch or stretching exercise that is chosen, based on physical assessments, to target a specific muscle or muscle group to increase the flexibility and range of motion in that area and bring the bones and or joints back towards the normal position.
When you compare a targeted stretch to general stretches like the ones found in Yoga, Pilates and the corny ones your doctor, chiropractor or physical therapist gives you, it's no surprise they give little or no pain relief and almost always fail to get rid of the problem.

Remember, the key to eliminating injuries and preventing future ones is to identify what areas you need to target. One rule in direct mail is that your letter sells your offer and your brochure sells what you're selling. For example, let's say you mail a classic direct mail package to generate sales leads for your enterprise software product. Your classic package will consist of a #10 mailing envelope, a sales letter, a brochure (perhaps an 8 1/2�½11 sheet folded twice), a reply device and a #9 return envelope.

In this package, your letter sells your offer (which might be anything from a white paper to a complimentary audit to a discount) and your brochure sells your product (describing in detail the tech features that are too cumbersome to include in a letter). Here's how to organize and write that brochure.

1. Create a compelling and memorable theme
Don't just name your product on the front cover, or simply feature a photo of your manufacturing plant taken from the air. Instead, craft a theme that captures your prospects attention and stimulates interest. Turn this theme into a headline for your front cover. Include a customer benefit, clearly stated or implied, whenever possible. Here are some examples:

(a) Committed to Memory (manufacturer of computer RAM)
(b) Now you're Talking (Voice Over IP service)
(c) We go the Distance (distance learning software)
(d) Get Online Without a Line (wireless email service)

2. Carry your cover theme throughout the brochure
Use images, subheads, captions and body copy that continue your front cover theme throughout the brochure. If your cover theme is "Now you're Talking," for example, a subhead inside the brochure might be, "Talk about a great deal." Your call to action might be, "We need to talk."

3. Start your selling message with your prospect
Inside the brochure, the first image and headline that your prospects see should speak directly to them and the problem they face. Don't start with you or your product. Start with the prospect.

4. Grab attention immediately
Arrest your prospect's attention and show that you understand their problem (the one that your product or service solves). For example, a software vendor sells an application that manages enterprise storage from a single management console. Here is how they grab their prospect's attention:

[Inside headline]
Adding storage solves your storage problems. True or false?

[First line of copy]
Is your distributed storage ballooning by 75% a year? If all you do is add more storage, all you do is compound your problems.

5. Describe your top benefits first
List the top five features of your product or service, and the benefits that customers get from these features. Remember that a feature is something that your product does, while a benefit is what that feature does for your prospect.

Now rank these top five features and benefits in order of their importance to your prospect. Then write your copy so that you mention the top benefit first, the second-most-important benefit second, and so on.

In the above example, for instance (point 4), you would list the following benefits, in this order, and flesh out each one with persuasive copy:

(a) reclaim up to 30% of your storage space enterprise-wide
(b) prevent premature and costly storage purchases by predicting when your servers will run out of space
(c) reduce data access problems and storage-related failures before they threaten your mission-critical data

6. Present proof
Back every claim you make with the kind of proof that resonates with your prospective buyer. In business-to-business mailings, some of the most compelling proofs are testimonials, comparisons with competing products, test results, case histories, industry awards, and names of well-known companies who are your clients.

7. Ask for the order
Treat your brochure as a salesperson who has to give your entire sales pitch. That way, if your brochure gets separated from your sales letter in the prospect's office, the brochure stands alone as a sales tool that can generate a sales enquiry. So ask for the order, usually at the end of the brochure. Tell the prospect exactly what to do take things to the next level (call your 1-800 number, call you, return the reply card, visit your website, download a demo, and so on).

Being In-Between Religions. Business Opportunities: Success and Failure Statistics as Well as Possible Prevention.

Who said religion has to last a lifetime?

When I was in my thirties, people used to ask me what religion I was. I'd stutter a little bit and then explain that I was, by my own definition, "in-between religions."

It raised a lot of eyebrows, but my answer always made perfect sense to me. I had outgrown the religion I grew up in and drifted away from the church of my youth, but I hadn't found a new religion that fit my adult lifestyle and my adult beliefs yet. I still believed in God, and did the best I knew how to be a good person without weekly guidance from my Sunday School teacher.

The GOD Driven Church

It never occurred to me then (although I've heard enough about it since) that separating from a church was the same to some people as separating from God himself; I was surprised that anyone would consider God and a church - or should I say God and THE church - as one and the same.

My light-hearted response about being in-between religions was usually met with disapproval, although I really never understood why. If people can be in-between jobs, or in-between houses, or in-between marriages, why can't they be in-between religions? If a person is in-between jobs, they're unemployed. If they're in-between houses, they're moving. If they're in-between marriages, they're single. But if - God forbid! - they're in-between religions, most religions consider them lost.

I will admit that it's easy to GET lost when you're in-between religions, because there are literally thousands of paths you can wander down in your search for spiritual truth, if you consider all of the different sects within each major religion in the world. Christianity alone has literally thousands of truths to choose from; Hinduism has well over a thousand Gods. It's no wonder that the serious seeker can spend years just checking out the options; it may well be decades before they start drawing any conclusions of their own.

Being in-between religions isn't right for everybody. Some people are happy where they're at, and some people aren't, and that's okay. Just because your brother attends the same church with his wife and children that your parents attended with you as a child doesn't mean you have to follow the family tradition.

I'm not saying for one minute that family tradition doesn't have an awful lot to do with our religious beliefs (or disbeliefs, as the case may be). The way our family looked at, dealt with, and talked about religion serves as the invisible cornerstone on which our own beliefs are built. Even if we come from solid stock who never looked at, dealt with or talked about religion, the inferred unimportance of it all still serves as that cornerstone as we reach adulthood.

There's something emotional (happy or sad) about giving up things from our childhood. It's amazing how many adults still have their teddy bears, and even more amazing how many adults never owned a teddy bear at all. If it's true that you can't miss what you never had, why do some grownups feel traumatized because they never had a bear of their very own to sleep with? Why are so many adults (I hesitate to say "most adults") traumatized because of the religious beliefs their family did or did not instill in them as children?

Because we were children, and we believed what the grown-ups told us, regardless of who the grown-ups were or what they had to say for themselves. They were grown-ups, and that made them smarter than us. They were the voice of experience; we knew they were wise because they were all ancient.

By the time we were half-way through school, we knew they weren't only smart, they were right. Always. They knew what they were talking about, and we usually got punished if we talked back or asked too many questions, which is probably why I still have some confusion in my own mind about where the fine line between "smart-aleck" and "bright, inquisitive child" lies.

And they stuck up for each other. Parents were always telling us that the teachers and preachers in our lives knew what was best for us, even though the parents didn't go to school with us all day every day and very seldom sat in on our Sunday School class to hear what we were being taught. Grown-ups stuck together, and their power in our lives - in our minds, and our hearts, and our bodies and our spirits - was summarized in one word: adult.

They taught us in a million unspoken words who we should be, how we should be it, and what we should be doing with our lives. And - because they were grown-ups - we accepted their definitions as our own. And that's the way it's supposed to be, because children of all ages need lots of help staying on the straight and narrow.

One of my favorite quotes from the Christian Bible says, "When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me." (I Corinthians 13:11, NIV). Putting childish ways behind you is just another way of saying, "I began to think for myself, as an adult. I became a grown-up, and took responsibility for who I am and what I do in and with my life."

I have the ultimate respect for the truths that others taught me when I was too young to think for myself. I also still think the dress I wore at my piano recital when I was in the second grade was beautiful, and the Ginger doll I played with for years on end was the most wonderful toy ever invented. I still think Captain Kangaroo was the best pretend friend a kid could want, and Annette Funicello was the most beautiful female in the world, especially when she wore her Mouseketeer ears. My mother was, without a doubt, the center of the whole universe, and I was blessed with food when there were children starving in China.

Those were some of my truths, when I was a child who talked like a child, thought like a child, and reasoned like a child. The fact that I was a child didn't make them any less true, for me anyway. But that was then, and this is now, and - like most adults - I've put childish ways (and truths) behind me. I've had lots of favorite dresses during the course of my years, and spend almost as much time with my computer as I did with my Ginger doll. The Captain has been replaced with real male friends and a gorgeous rock idol or two along the way; Annette was pretty, but not nearly as beautiful as my own children came to be. Some things never change: my mother will always be my mother, and there will always be children starving somewhere in the world, no matter how much of my uneaten food she sends them.

Life changes, and - if we're wise enough, and brave enough - our truth about life will change, too. We have to remember that change is the only constant in our lives; if we're not changing, we're being stagnant, and if we're being stagnant, we're wasting this precious gift called life. It's okay to wonder if what we were taught as a child does or does not apply to our adult life and our grown-up ways; it's okay to put those ways behind us if they don't fit us anymore.

It takes a lot of courage and strength of character to step outside the box of established religion and look for a spiritual truth that will work for you all day, everyday, with no loopholes and no exceptions. Like life, truth is fluid, and we can go with the flow of our spiritual quest a whole lot more comfortably if we are willing to answer the question "what religion are you?" with a simple "I'm in-between religions. How about you?"

The reason for the failure rate is also attributable to certain outlooks and requirements that many business opportunity "joiners" fail to consider when joining:

1. Is the business opportunity nothing more than empty promises, the old "too good to be true" adage? Unfortunately, these types of offerings run rampant both online and offline.

2. Is the business opportunity catering to a dying market? Markets can fluctuate, so due diligence is needed. Research into markets, just as with any other business is paramount.

3. Is the business opportunity solvent? Talk to other members, and do research. Become aware of any problems in payments/revenues before you join.

4. Is the business opportunity flexible? Does the Biz Op restrict members in their advertising methods, or are they inflexible and "distant" in their approach to members' concerns/problems.

5. Is the business opportunity viable? Viability should be financial as well as personal. In other words, does the Biz Op have a great financial track record and does it meet the needs of "you" personally, as far as personal satisfaction and approaches to sales and marketing?

6. Is the business opportunity working within the confines of federal, state and local laws? Depending upon where a member lives, these laws can vary widely!

The real statistics on failures of small businesses, many of which now are business opportunities and franchises, are well documented by the United States Small Business Administration: www.sbaonline.sba.gov/. Business statistics provided by the United States Department of Labor, report that in 1994, the number of businesses that failed that year were divided into the following categories:

* Bankruptcies (a 15.4% increase from 1993).

* Failures (a 17% increase from 1993).

* Terminations (.3% increase from 1993).

The Small Business Administration attributes these failures and the evolving higher percentages to the fact that there are now MORE small businesses in the United States overall, with a 49% increase in numbers since 1982.

The Small Business Administration also states specifically that statistically, only one in seven can be considered a true "failure", leaving unpaid obligations in their wakes. Others simply sell or shut their doors for a variety of other reasons.

Since most business opportunities, at least initially, open with less than 100 employees (many are simply the owner, as sole owner and executor of all business "chores"), then most Biz Ops are indeed "small businesses" and as such all the pertinent failure statistics can be applied to them. What is really surprising and rather "staggering" is the fact that most business failures are not due to outside forces, but those that the business owner has complete control over! lack of record keeping, lack of management competence, lack of financial management, and other business basics such as controlling employees and the inability to seek outside assistance and advice!

The wise business owner, whether or not involved in a business opportunity, will seek to learn and implement proper procedures, and investigate proper methods of operation throughout the life of a business.
